Azium Treatment

Post on Icelandicsworldwide Message Board by Martina Gates, June 22nd 2004

I don’t know of a specific eczema vaccine but I have treid desensetation and it only worked OK. If the horse was in any stress the symptoms flared up with a rage.

I did try something else a few weeks ago and it worked incredibly. One of my horses that never showed any signs of eczema suddenly had the classic scabs along his midline and sheath. He had already biten and kicked at it for several days before I acknowledged it.

I immediately put him on 12mg of Azium for 5 days, treated the lessions with medicated soap and swat and put him in his stall overnight. Within 5 days the symptoms calmed down so I reduced the dosage to 8 mg day for another 5 days. No new symptoms showed up. I sprayed and still spray the midline and sheath every morning with fly/gnat spray. After 5 days I reduced the dosage to 4 mg a day for another 5 days. Then I finished off giving him 2mg a day for another 10 days and stopped the treatment after no new symptoms came up. He has been symptom free for 6 weeks, all I do now is fly/gnat spray every morning before he goes out and put him in his stall with a fan at night.

I think it is essential to start treatment as soon as the symptoms show up. The Azium seems to supress the immune system and calm down the symptoms. If the treatment is started too late I can imagine that it would be harder to calm down the immune system. Maybe I was just lucky but I think it is worth a try.
